LG Flatron L3000A

An impressive glimpse of a TFT future. Makes an effective plasma replacements for all areas of the market at a reasonable cost.

Overall Rating
4 stars out of 6

With its RS232 remote-control management (as well as the infrared remote supplied with both models), the NEC-Mitsubishi is an excellent choice for more demanding commercial applications, as well as for the devoted home-cinema enthusiast. The slightly more discreet LG certainly wouldn't look out of place in the boardroom or living room either, and for the £1,000 price difference most domestic users won't miss the flexibility. If you can spend £3,000 on a demonically overclocked PC, why not invest in one of these?

While the price difference between these and equivalent plasma models isn't much, TFTs are a better long-term investment when you take into account the total cost of ownership, particularly in terms of replacement and running costs. Both monitors come with good warranties too, with NEC-Mitsubishi offering a two-year, European on-site service, and LG a three-year, on-site exchange.

These screens offer a promising glimpse into the potential of TFTs - and this is just the beginning. With huge R&D investment in TFT technology and 46in screens on the horizon, the future isn't looking so bright for plasma.
