ASK C60

Verdict

Disappointing image quality, but with a low price and good running costs the C60 is a reasonable choice for the budget conscious.

Review Date: 1 Jul 2001

Price when reviewed: (£3,043 inc VAT)

Overall Rating
4 stars out of 6

All of this is controlled using the small remote handset, which features direct controls for brightness and contrast, as well as keystone, which allows you to quickly adjust settings without navigating through the menu. The remote is also a good size and weight, unlike the credit card-sized remote of Iiyama's LPX100 (see Reviews, issue 82, p166) and works from an acceptable range of angles.

Where the Iiyama LPX100 and the C60 bear a similarity, though, is with operational noise levels. The C60's ambient noise level is quoted at a whisper-quiet 34db or lower, similar to the LPX100 and, while we were unable to measure this, I wouldn't challenge ASK's claim.

The ASK C60 is a good-value projector that sports the bare minimum of connection options and features to make it competitive. However, image quality is bettered by the likes of Eizo with its FlexScan IP420U (see Labs, issue 79, p102), although in fairness the C60 is over £600 cheaper. In fact, value for money is its strongest card, and with low running costs of 11.3p per hour it's one of the most affordable projectors around.

If your main priority is image quality, though, the Eizo is a better investment, and there's still little to touch NEC's MultiSync LT155 (see Labs, issue 79, p102) for a fully featured portable projector. But, if your budget is tight, the C60 is capable of doing the job.
