MSI Megabook S271

Verdict

Great value for an ultraportable, although build quality is uninspiring

Review Date: 1 Oct 2005

Price when reviewed: (£787 inc VAT)

Overall Rating
4 stars out of 6

Unusually, there isn't a PC Card slot present, which poses a problem for those who want to add ports or a 3G data card. One unexpected bonus is the presence of an ExpressCard/54 slot, although cards in this format are thin on the ground at present. There are three USB 2 ports, while D-SUB, Ethernet and the 56K modem socket are the only options on the side. The 3.5mm audio jacks and mini-FireWire port are on the front of the machine, which means you can't use them comfortably when the S271 is on your lap.

The price/size combination is attractive, but this isn't the right notebook for everyone. It's only on the move that you'll appreciate the small screen and decent battery life, and you'll also need to be careful with the slightly flimsy build quality. The two-year collect-and-return warranty is reasonably reassuring, but it just can't compete with the superb offerings from the likes of Dell, and the less-than-ideal ergonomics will grate on those needing to get some work done. With all that in mind, it's still worth considering if real portability on a budget is what you need.
