Sony VAIO VGN-SZ1VP review

Verdict

A beautifully designed notebook that's perfect for life on the move thanks to a low weight and great battery life. The emphasis on design is reflected in the price, but it's worth it

The specification is high throughout, with 1GB of RAM making a sensible foundation to keep Windows running smoothly. The 5,400rpm 120GB hard disk is one of the fastest and largest around, and there's a dual-format dual-layer DVD writer plus an ExpressCard/34 slot for expansion. The built-in card reader only handles Sony's own Memory Stick formats, with an ExpressCard/34 reader bundled for other major formats (SD/MMC/xD/Memory Stick Pro). Naturally, there's 10/100 Ethernet and 802.11a/b/g WLAN, with the latter complemented by a dedicated switch along the top of the keyboard. Bluetooth comes as standard. The only disappointment is a paltry single mini-FireWire and two USB 2 ports.

This is undoubtedly an expensive purchase, but the SZ1VP looks fantastic, performs admirably and is a pleasure to use. The dual-graphics approach is also an undoubted success. You can certainly find machines with comparable performance and features for less cash, but not at this weight and with this much battery life. If you're looking for a prestige, highly portable notebook, the SZ1VP is the best we've seen.
