Gateway 8550GB review

Verdict

A huge 17.1in widescreen TFT, 100GB hard disk and all the power most people need - whether in 2D or 3D - make the 8550GB incredible value for money

Removable storage is handled by a dual-format dual-layer DVD writer and a 4-in-1 media card reader. But what pleased us most was the 100GB hard disk, which provides plenty of room for apps and a decent media library, and is a great inclusion for a notebook at this price. 7GB of the disk is partitioned as a recovery drive: with a couple of key presses, it's possible to restore the factory image.

Our only reservation is that the current business model of Gateway's UK operation has yet to prove itself and, while its customer support has remained open throughout the company's absence from the UK, this hasn't been on a major scale. The standard one-year collect-and-return warranty is a little disappointing too, although it's backed by an intriguing End-User Replaceable Parts Programme, whereby you can optionally be sent a replacement part to fit yourself.

This month's Labs-winning HP Compaq nx6125 offers higher build quality, greater portability and business-orientated features, such as an integrated fingerprint reader, but the 8550GB remains a far more attractive and flexible option if you can afford the extra £87. By offering so much capable technology for a tempting price, it takes its place on the A List.
