But it's the ruggedness and security features that will make the T42 attractive to many. Build quality is rock-solid, particularly around the screen, so you can be confident the display won't get damaged in an overfull bag. Like other ThinkPads, the lid has an overlap that clamps around the base section to reduce twisting, and metal screen hinges are reassuringly substantial. Then there's IBM's Active Protection System, which parks the hard disk's read/write heads in cases of sudden acceleration to reduce damage. And for peace of mind, the embedded ThinkVantage security chip offers hardware encryption for data, manages passwords and enhances Wi-Fi security. Those deploying fleets will also appreciate the preload image compatibility with other ThinkPad models.

For the individual, the T42's price is on the high side but, for corporate purchases, this is an impressively powerful and portable unit, with battery life being the only marginal let-down. All in all, the combination of superb quality and security features add up to a Recommended award.
