Dell Latitude D400

Verdict

It's crying out for longer battery life and a more efficient design, but there's no denying that the D400 offers amazing value for money.

It's also unlikely you'll need more power, as the 1.4GHz Pentium-M and 512MB of RAM worked together to produce a 2D benchmark score of 1.23. However, if you want to play 3D games, you'd be better off with the Toshiba Portege R100 and its dedicated 32MB Trident XP4 graphics chip. The Dell, with its integrated Intel graphics, only scored 1,850 in 3DMark2001 SE compared with the Toshiba's 4,991.

But the main reason to buy the Toshiba instead is its size. At just 19mm thick, it's a miracle of engineering compared with the oversized D400. And, if battery life is a priority, IBM's ThinkPad X31 remains the best choice. Where the D400 wins is sheer value. It offers an awful lot for a small amount of money, and this even includes a three-year, next business day, on-site warranty - good news for bulk business buyers.
