An excellent system that performs well as a DV editor. The Avid software is extremely powerful too, but offers poor value when compared with Pinnacle Edition.

The Power Pack adds to the filters, providing image stabilisation and film grain among others, and also comes with the full version of Boris FX for compositing and Boris Graffiti for complex titling. Compatibility of Xpress DV projects with Avid's high-end broadcast systems makes this an excellent purchase for the freelance Avid editor, but the rest of us will find the Avid price premium unjustified. By comparison, the same notebook with Pinnacle's Edition DV costs just £2,499, and some people - myself included - prefer it too.

This is still a great machine, though, representing fine performance and great value for money. A portable Avid system won't be appropriate for everyone, but Red Submarine offers an extensive choice of editing software, including the aforementioned Edition, Adobe Premiere, Sonic Foundry's Vegas Video and even Pinnacle's entry-level editor Studio 8. This is a first-rate workhorse for the enthusiast and freelance professional.
