HP does sell additional batteries, with six-cell and 12-cell models costing £72 and £109 exc VAT respectively - the latter should bring the time away from the mains to around the five hours mark - but don't forget that will add to the already considerable 3.15kg weight.

Despite these issues it is, however, an exceedingly impressive laptop. It's not particularly portable, but it doesn't need to be: the full-HD resolution screen, Blu-ray drive and excellent speakers mean that it's the ideal entertainment desktop replacement.

Add in the TV tuner, respectable performance and relatively low cost - £847 is a little more expensive than the Qosmio, but less than the Acer Aspire and Sony VAIO - and it's clear that the HP is a serious contender.
