Fortunately, the performance in our 2D benchmark tests was far more satisfactory, with the Versa scoring 1.83 overall. Curiously, this score isn't quite as fast as that of the original Versa, which had half the RAM, with slightly slower scores in our Word and Excel tests. The extra memory made itself felt in the Photoshop test, however, with a dramatic increase to 2.85 over the original 2.01 graphics score.

With the addition of the bigger screen and a bit more memory, the Versa AX has become a better budget desktop replacement - and in that context the NiMH battery isn't such a big issue. Add to that the absence of a dramatic change in the price of £993 plus £35 for delivery, and the Versa AX deserves a place on the cost-conscious buyer's shortlist.
