IBM ThinkPad A22p

Verdict

A fine piece of engineering and impressively fast. Decide for yourself about the screen and trackpoint ergonomics, but you may find yourself carried along by the ThinkPad's abundance of desirable features.

Review Date: 1 Jun 2001

Price when reviewed: (£2,853 inc VAT)

Overall Rating
5 stars out of 6

The only downside here is one that probably won't affect most business users; namely, the choice of graphics chipset. IBM has gone for an ATi Rage Mobility 128, which is at its best in 2D mode, whereas Dell gives the Inspiron 8000 an nVIDIA GeForce2 Go, the GPU that brought decent 3D acceleration to the mobile platform.

Still, the ThinkPad makes an excellent choice for the business user wanting either a power notebook in its own right or a complete desktop replacement, and judged on these terms it's an impressive machine.
