IBM ThinkPad 380D

Verdict

A solid, workmanlike notebook and a cut above the usual rebadged models in this price bracket. If you need a reasonably affordable notebook with the assurance of a good brand, put the 380D on your shortlist.

Unfortunately, one area that IBM isn't renowned for is staggering performance, and the 380D is no exception. The less-than-impressive performance can mostly be put down to the Pentium/150 inside, which lags behind the MMX-enabled chips being found in most modern notebooks. This is the cheaper option, and if you want a notebook for under £2,000 with a strong brand name to back it up, the ThinkPad is a reasonable choice.
