The smallest of the three Philips frames in this month's test is also the best looking. Rejecting many of the trappings of modern design, the 7FFICWO is more traditional in appearance, with a wood-effect surround, trimmed tastefully in silver.

The 730 x 480-pixel resolution is also higher than those of most of the other 7in frames in the Labs this month - most offer just 480 x 234 - and this pays dividends. There's a slight graining of the image when viewed up close, but that's as bad as it gets; everything else is picture perfect. Slideshow transitions work well, too, which is a pleasant surprise given the high resolution.

Controls are on the rear and quite awkward to access, as using them involves holding the frame like a control pad - not the most ergonomic design. This issue is compounded by the fact that the frame is a weighty beast. It's this added weight, however, that adds a definite air of quality and assurance that's lacking in many rival frames.

The 7FFICWO provides two types of USB connection, standard and mini, which always aids versatility, although again the inclusion of a headphone socket seems slightly out of place. This Philips frame isn't wall-mountable, unlike some of the larger models in the range, but the stand allows for landscape and portrait orientation.

Despite a few minor shortcomings, though this is a solid product. Attractive design, solid build and impressive image quality make it a commendable choice, especially if you aren't hugely concerned about wireless.
