Great quality and feature-packed, but not an Ixus killer.

Last of the Lumix trio is this style-conscious variation, with similar features. The Leica-branded lens and 25mm wide-angle are there, along with identical controls to the TZ6.

The menu system on the rear is also the same, albeit presented on a less impressive 2.5in screen, which seems pokey after the 3in screens of the other two models. But all the functions are present, including a useful real-time onscreen histogram; very handy for assessing the dynamic range of a scene before you shoot.

An extra trick up the sleeve of the FX40, though, is its video-recording capability. As well as the so-called WVGA of the other two, the FX40 will shoot 720p video at 30fps. Results are very good, although the drawback is that neither zooming or autofocus work when recording (see box, p70).

Indoor low-light performance is just as mediocre as that of its cousin the FS25, but outdoor shots are a pleasant surprise. Our test shots had lovely contrast and saturation, and among the best levels of details in the group - as long as you don't zoom out fully, when a little too much softness sets in.

We like the FX40's design and industrial looks, and its size is a definite advantage it holds over its siblings. But the problem is that price: for this money, we'd rather forego the Lumix and plump for an Ixus 100 IS. The focal-length range may not compare, but its video capability is just as good and it's superior in most other respects too.
