The cheapest of the three Panasonic models sits between the other two size-wise. The Lumix FS25 takes its styling cues from the larger TZ6 but avoids most of the pocket-catching lumps and, while big compared to the Canon Ixus 100 or Nikon Coolpix S220, it's definitely a pocket camera. The slightly larger-than-average body gives room for an impressive 3in screen too.

It shares the Leica-branded lens with its two stablemates, although the focal-length range isn't quite as impressive at 29-145mm equivalent. That's a zoom range of 5x, though, and the 29mm wide-angle isn't much less flexible than the 25mm of the TZ6 and FX40.

The FS25's quality isn't on a par with the TZ6, mostly due to poor low-light performance. Its high-ISO shots aren't usable, with the results at ISO 1600 beset by colour noise and detail smearing from over processing. Outdoor shots were far more impressive - the Leica badge on the lens isn't just for show - with a fine level of detail. Two spanners in the works were off-kilter colour balance and lack of contrast, along with hit-and-miss exposure that both over- and under-exposed in testing. But these are correctable in software.

The foibles of the TZ6's controls are here too, with that zoom lag making for frustrating delays as you try to zoom correctly before people's smiles wear off. The FS25 is a solid camera; it's just the competition is better. For a tiny bit more money you can buy the better quality, smaller size and slicker operation of the Canon Ixus 95 IS.
