IBM NetVista X40

Verdict

A design leader, thanks to its compact footprint, bright, readable screen and accessible key components. The only downfall is the high price, partly as a consequence of the TFT screen.

PCPRO Recommended

Performance from the combination of a Pentium III/866, 128Mb of PC133 SDRAM and a 30Gb UltraDMA/66 IBM hard disk was balanced, with no obvious debilitating bottlenecks, and this helped the NetVista gain an overall PC Pro 2D benchmark score of 2.29. Still, machines like this aren't primarily judged on speed, and the NetVista has many other positive qualities to recommend it.

The only down side is the price, which is inflated by the NetVista's flat panel. This is the big sticking point really, and inevitably it will be too much for some customers, even if they're more than happy with the machine in every other respect. Otherwise the NetVista X40 is a well-designed, stylish workstation, with a quality screen, easy access to the insides and the performance needed for general office use.
