General Dynamics Itronix GoBook MR-1

Verdict

If you need a truly rugged ultraportable and don't care what it looks like, the MR-1 is the machine for the job.

Review Date: 18 Sep 2007

Price when reviewed: (£3,767 inc VAT)

Overall Rating
4 stars out of 6

The review model came with Bluetooth and 802.11a/b/g Wi-Fi built-in - both optional extras at £85 and £132 exc VAT respectively. The modular design allows for up to three RF devices, such as GPRS or HSDPA, to be included as well as GPS. With all that technology packed in, it still measures only 153 x 110 x 40mm (WDH) and weighs just 1.26kg.

The MR-1 is a specialist device and few require a laptop that can take the punishment it's capable of withstanding. If you look past its utilitarian casing and high price tag, however, you'll see a PC that can keep going in conditions that would turn a normal laptop into a quivering wreck.
