STB Velocity 128 ZX

Verdict

Good 2D performance and a great 3D speed makes the ZX a sensible choice, but it's not much of an improvement over the original, and there are faster cards around.

Review Date: 1 Aug 1998

Price when reviewed: (£115 inc VAT)

Overall Rating
4 stars out of 6

However, with nVidia making more and more noise about its next-generation chipset, the imminent Riva TNT, I can only wonder about the wisdom of buying a card based around what is essentially dated technology. In addition, with S3's latest chipset, the Savage3D (previewed opposite), performing better even at the beta silicone and driver stage, it appears this is a card that's going to be overtaken very quickly.

The STB Velocity 128 ZX is fast, boasts solid 2D and 3D performance and is currently good value for money. But, if you don't want to pay now and regret it very soon, sit on your wallet and wait.
