Canopus DVRaptor-RT

Verdict

More limited than its competition, but its features are comprehensive and well implemented. A good working solution rather than a toy for the well-heeled.

Review Date: 1 Sep 2001

Price when reviewed: (£469 inc VAT); with Adobe Premiere 6, £489 (£575 inc VAT)

Overall Rating
5 stars out of 6

Put in competition with the Pinnacle DV500 and Matrox RT2500, the DVRaptor-RT has much to recommend it, with its high-quality real-time effects and stable solid performance. Many potential buyers will, however, be swayed away from the DVRaptor-RT due to its lack of analog input, and the RT2500 will undoubtedly pull custom away with its massive range of effects and transitions. That said, DV hardware at this level shouldn't be bought purely on the strength of flashy effects that the editor will probably never use. In that respect, Canopus has got the balance right in presenting the DVRaptor-RT as a workhorse rather than a novelty.
