This 160GB external drive from Toshiba is more than simply an IDE hard disk attached to a USB converter - it's also password protected. Plug it in and the built-in software produces a password window, which you need to complete before the drive will let you access data. The drive isn't exceptionally quick - we wrote 100MB of mixed files at 14MB/sec and read them back from the drive at 10MB/sec. It's also fairly bulky, and doesn't come close to the low noise and good looks of the Western Digital My Book Pro Edition. There's also the fact that 160GB isn't a particularly practical size for most system backups. The security features are useful, though, and the price makes the Toshiba decent value for money.
