Iiyama Vision Master Pro 413  [PC Pro]

We last looked at a monitor with this name back in March 2002 (see Labs, issue 91, p76). At the time, both it and the Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 740SB impressed us with their image quality, but the 740SB won that tussle.

Mitsubishi has now updated the tube technology and Iiyama has taken advantage of this by releasing a new variant of the Pro 413. The name remains exactly

the same, but the stock code has changed from HM703UT to HM703UTA.

Mitsubishi has released its own monitor using this new tube - the Diamond Pro 750SB. However, thanks to different electronics inside the chassis, the two monitors' functions aren't entirely identical. This brings us to the only difference between the old and new Pro 413 monitors.

The brightness in OPQ mode on the old monitor was 300cd/m2 and 125cd/m2 for normal mode. The new version has the same specification for normal mode, but once OPQ mode is activated the brightness increases to 420cd/m2. There's a slight blurring of detail and text with this mode activated, but no more than the old monitor.

Sadly, Iiyama hasn't included the usability tweaks present on the Mitsubishi, like two levels of extra brightness and brightening the current window. Therefore, the Pro 413 is a less attractive proposition, allowing the Mitsubishi to remain on our A List for a while longer.
