Ion iTTUSB  [PC Pro]
COMPANY: Ion Audio PRICE: £84  (£99)
RATING: ISSUE: 156  DATE: Oct 07

Verdict: An attractive idea but poorly executed

The iTTUSB is billed as the first turntable with a USB audio output, but it isn't: at least one other exists, from Pro-Ject Audio (www.project-audio.com). The iTTUSB's construction is entirely plastic and the platter has very little weight to it. You'll need a steady hand, too, as there's no lever to lift or lower the arm. The cartridge is branded GT and comes "pre-aligned". Software is limited to a copy of the open-source Audacity. Sound quality through its USB connection is no more than acceptable: rumble is easily audible, it has a tizzy top end and it's very sensitive to external vibration - don't slam any doors while you're recording. There are plenty of non-USB turntables around in the same price range as the Ion, which, while not as convenient, will give you far better recordings.
