Verdict: With Firefox nearly as mainstream as Internet Explorer these days, are there any real alternative browsers left?

It's actually quite hard to truly escape Internet Explorer or Firefox, because many alternative browsers just wrap a different user interface around the same rendering engines that drive the market leaders.

Maxthon also suffers from poor documentation, but given that Google has taken a financial interest recently, that's likely to change. Maxthon has tried to outdo the competition by having more features than any other. So, as well as the tabbed browsing and mouse-gesture navigation, you can drag and drop links, images and text on the web page to open, search or save them. There are excellent favourites, proxy and ad-block management features, and even a free service for accessing your PC files across the web. We're not sure about the Boss Key feature, though, which completely hides the browser rather than minimising it to the System Tray with a combo-key click. The ability to right-click on any tab and perform multiple actions such as window locking, viewing of all links, open in IE and so on is more commendable, as is the properly implemented support for the Vista Aero interface.
