If you already have a list style in a document that you want to move to a Template so you can reuse it, use the Organizer. From the Styles Task Pane, click Manage Styles - third button on the bottom and then click the Import/Export button. Here you can open a template, such as Normal.dotx, as well as your document and copy the styles you want into the template.
