After the failure of Embrace-Extend-Extinguish, Microsoft is opting for what you might call Embrace-Enhance-Eclipse. It isn't a benevolent enterprise - the goal is still web domination and profit, and the stifling of browser development through IE will still prompt accusations of anti-competitive tactics However, if the company's XAML-based mission delivers a universal platform that's richer and more powerful, robust and integrated than all the open web standards put together, designers may decide that the end justifies the means.
