Windows Embedded NavReady 2009, is built on the stripped down Windows CE 5 platform which is already used by a number of GPS manufacturers as a base for their offerings.
However, with NavReady Microsoft is adding a number of navigation-specific tools, including Live Search which will allow devices to root on the internet for local information including tourists spots.
NavReady will also synch with the MSN Direct service to offer information on traffic conditions, routes and petrol prices.
Microsoft is also promising Bluetooth support for hands-free tasks, and Slideshow which will allow devices to act as a second monitor when connected to a Vista PC.
Microsoft currently has one confirmed partner in Mio, and claims devices powered by the operating system will start appearing later in the year.
