The news comes as the company releases its first-quarter financial figures, showing that profits have also declined by 11%.

A slowdown in Windows sales contributed strongly to these falling figures, as Microsoft announced a drop of nearly a quarter in the number of operating system licenses sold.

however, with a 68% increase in the number of consoles sold compared to the previous year, reaching to over 19 million. Business outside of the United States was also strong.

"Our broad span across geographies, product categories and customer segments is a tremendous asset," says Chris Liddell, chief financial officer of Microsoft.

Despite the poor performance in recent months, the company seems determined to continue in its ownership bid for Yahoo.

"We have yet to see tangible evidence that our bid substantially undervalues the company," Liddell said, referring to Yahoo. "In fact, we see the opposite."

Liddell went on to explain that Microsoft will either attempt a hostile takeover or drop its ownership bid altogether if Yahoo maintains "unrealistic expectations" of a better deal.
