Auric and NoFear virus alert

By Alun Williams

Posted on 23 Jun 2003 at 13:05

MessageLabs is warning us to beware the new mass-mailing viruses Auric.E-mm and NoFear.B-mm.

Seemingly originating from Hungary, Auric.E-mm has been detected in the States as well as Hungary, with nine copies of the virus intercepted so far. Rated as 'Low Risk', Auric disables anti-virus protection and spreads itself by email and peer-to-peer networks.

The NoFear.B-mm virus, which is also rated as a 'Low Risk' by MessageLabs, has been intercepted four times. It is a mass-mailing Internet worm, that harvests email addresses from your Address book. Its payload is an executable to spread itself over email and shared networks. MessageLabs pointed out to us that variants of NoFear are increasingly used by spammers - as well as emailing itself, the worm can spread spam messages and cover the tracks of the original spammer

More information can be found at MessageLabs.com.

To complete the virus picture for the new week, Sophos is also warning about the email worms Redist-C and Nofer-B. The anti-virus specialist, however, says it has not yet received user reports of these worms.
