IBM has added to its T Series of notebooks with security features for protecting corporate data and e-mail.
The IBM sales line for the new ThinkPad T23 is that its Embedded Security Subsystem offers "Smart-Card-like features at a fraction of the cost". For more secure 802.11b wireless comms, IBM claims that the models are the first with security chip subsystems to enhance network authentication and access controls.
Weighing 2.18kg and with a thickness of 1.3 inches, the spec for the T23 is as follows. There's a 14.1 inch XGA or SXGA+TFT display, the new Mobile Intel Pentium III Processor-M, and a choice of 15/30/48Gb hard drives (IBM's 48GB Travelstar drive is available for the first time in the ThinkPad T23). IBM claims that the new graphics chipset improves 2D and 3D performance and offers twice the video memory of previous ThinkPad T Series notebooks. Windows 98 or Windows 2000 Professional are preloaded.
Wireless models also come with V.92-ready modems and 10/100 Ethernet support. Bluetooth PC Cards or UltraPort Modules are an optional extra.
As for pricing, estimated (US) street pricing starts from $2,279 - UK pricing is still to be confirmed. Check out the T series part of IBM's Web site for more details.
