Dell recalls four million laptop batteries 10:34AM, Tuesday 15th August 2006
Dell has recalled more than four million laptop batteries amid concerns that they can overheat and, in extreme circumstances, burst into flame.

'Dell is voluntarily recalling certain Dell-branded batteries with cells manufactured by Sony and offering free replacements for these batteries,' said the company.

'Under rare conditions, it is possible for these batteries to overheat, which could pose a risk of fire.'

The Dell-branded lithium-ion batteries were manufactured by Sony and sold with the following Dell notebook computers: Dell Latitude D410, D500, D505, D510, D520, D600, D610, D620, D800, D810; Inspiron 6000, 8500, 8600, 9100, 9200, 9300, 500m, 510m, 600m, 6400, E1505, 700m, 710m, 9400, E1705; Dell Precision M20, M60, M70 and M90 mobile workstations; and XPS, XPS Gen2, XPS M170 and XPS M1710. They were also sold separately, and some shipped as a result of service calls.

The affected batteries were shipped between 1 April 2004 and 18 July 2006.

Dell laptop users should visit dellbatteryprogram.com to determine if their battery is affected and order a replacement.
