The market for TV on mobiles is hotting up further with the announcement of a new industry body to promote the DVB-H format for delivering video to mobile devices.

The Mobile DTV Alliance consists of some of the biggest players in mobile and wireless communications including Intel, Motorola, Nokia and Texas Instruments.

Alliance say that they plan to work together to ensure compatibility amongst the vendors.

The Alliance says that there are more than 10 DVB-H network trials currently underway across the world, including Australia, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States. and other countries. It says that by 2007, most U.S. major markets are expected to have DVB-H infrastructure built and ready for deployment.

The Alliance has been formed to try and establish a standard method of transmitting TV to mobile devices in the face of the growth of competing standards. In the US, wireless giant Qualcomm is developing its own multicast streaming specification (called forward link only, or FLO) slated to launch in late 2006. There is also the DMB (Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) already launched in Korea and the TDtv format announced this week.
