Sony counts the cost of a Blu-ray PS3 4:59PM, Monday 5th September 2005
Sony's decision to equip next-year's PlayStation 3 with its new Blu-ray optical disc drive will not come cheap. At the Games Developer Conference Europe it was revealed that the drives will cost around $100 each, several times more than the cost of a standard DVD drive.

The cost will either have to be met by Sony or passed on to the anticipated millions of PS3 buyers. Indeed, Sony admits that the console will be expensive. This will doubtless be greeted with smiles at Microsoft, whose rival console, the Xbox 360, sports a humble but cheap DVD drive.

Nonetheless the decision to go with Blu-ray is a calculated gamble as the company has much to gain by establishing a foothold for the technology as quickly as possible if it is to emerge from the imminent battle with HD-DVD as the dominant high-capacity format.
