palmOne LifeDrive isLaunched 12:03PM, Wednesday 18th May 2005
palmOne has finally officially unveiled the latest addition to its PDA line-up, the LifeDrive.

As we first reported in April, the LifeDrive will be the first PDA with a hard drive (a 4GB Hitachi Microdrive to be precise), making it a viable option for storing photos, short video clips and music. The expansion slot supports SD, SDIO and MultiMediaCard formats for transferring photos from a camera.

The handheld also has built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, another first for palmOne, with full Web browsing and POP and IMAP email support. The expansion slot also supports palmOne accessories, such as the GPS car cradle or a full-size keyboard.

Office documents from Word, Excel and PowerPoint can be viewed and edited; there is also support for reading PDF files. The built invoice recorder, in addition to handily recording your musings, can be used

to record narratives to accompany PowerPoint slideshows.

The 320x480 pixel, 16-bit, transflective TFT display provides 65,000 colours, and can instantly be flipped from portrait to landscape or back again. Under the hod, there is a 416MHz Intel Xscale processor.

The security conscious will note the use of password protection to safeguard access to your device, plus the Private Records function that protects specific files when the rest of the device is unlocked. The optional Intrusion Protection function erases all data and returns the device to factory settings after a user-specified number of failed break-ins.

The device is compatible with both Windows 2000/XP and Mac OS X.

The LifeDrive is the first product in palmOne's Mobile Manager range, designed to fuse business productivity tools and entertainment applications.

'LifeDrive mobile manager comes at an inflection point in the market, when people are ready for more advanced devices that meet their growing mobile-computing needs,' said Ken Wirt, senior VP of worldwide marketing for palmOne. 'LifeDrive is versatile. For the business executive, it's a personal mobile briefcase; for the photo enthusiast, it's a camera companion.'

The LifeDrive costs £329. For more information go to euro.palmone.com.
