GNER gives green light to on-train wireless Internet access 11:28AM, Wednesday 7th April 2004
Uninterrupted wireless Internet access is to be made available on high-speed trains on the East Coast Mainline, following the successful conclusion of trials by the line's operator, GNER.

Employing a system developed in Scandinavia, the satellite-based system has already been fitted to five of its trains, becoming available to passengers in the summer, and seven more trains will be equipped by the end of the year.

Access will be provided throughout the train, free in first class and £4.95 per hour in standard; power points will also be available.

GNER is the first UK train operator to offer on-board Wi-Fi. Trials began towards the end of last year and chief executive Christopher Garnett said, 'After covering more than 160,000 miles of intensive service, the kit works superbly and passenger reaction and interest has been fantastic.'

Further information about the service and on which trains it will be available can be found at www.gnermobileoffice.co.uk.
