Sony showcase DVR-Blue prototype 4:51PM, Tuesday 10th October 2000
Sony and Philips showed off their next-generation optical disks for the first time at the CEATEC 2000 show in Japan.

The new DVR-Blue format records data using a special GaN blue diode laser and its optical disk has a single-side capacity of 22.5Gb. One disk can record up to two hours of HDTV quality broadcast but for present TV quality the disk could store eight hours of footage. The writer uses MPEG2 and can record and playback at 24Mb/sec.

Sony said that the device is only a trial prototype and is not for marketing. The unit on display consisted of two parts. The first box (pictured) contained the optical disk system and the second unit contained the circuits for processing the image and sound data, the both of them being connected with cables.

There was no date set for when such a unit would be produced for the consumer electronics market.
