VeryPC has launched what it claims are the "most sustainable PCs on the planet", including a quad-core PC that idles at only 25.8W. It's also the first PC to earn the "Class Leader" award from DEFRA's Quick Wins scheme, designed to reward companies that produce sustainable goods.

The top-end VeryPC Broadleaf GreenPC uses a 2.83GHz Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550S, an enhanced version of the Core 2 Quad Q9550 with a 30% lower thermal design power and support for the very lowest power states.

Peter Hopton, managing director of VeryPC, claims the GreenPC's credentials run far deeper than the low-energy components. "It uses aluminium from renewable sources, it's free of BFRs, it's free of toxins and it's fully recyclable," he told PC Pro.

The PC's usage is also carbon offset for five years, with the offsets being specifically targeted at renewable energy schemes in South Africa and Vietnam.

And Hopton claims the final green straw is the power supply, with an 89%-plus efficient 130W unit inside.

The first Broadleaf PCs are all targeted at businesses and will run Windows 7 Professional, with prices starting at £449 exc VAT with a dual-core Intel E5300 inside. The quad-core model costs £649 exc VAT.

We hope to get a system in for review next week.

Look great but too expensive. I picked up 2 similarly specced dell vostro 220's with 20 inch widescreen monitors for 400 each the other week. Not as green mind..

Isn't this the company that was scoffed at by that arrogant and annoying bloke on Dragon's Den? (Yes, I know they all are). If so, glad to see the company still going.
