Dell may begin to use AMD chips in some of its servers according to the company's Chief Executive Kevin Rollins. The revelation was made in conference call to analysts to discuss the company's Q3 earnings.
No deal has yet been made with AMD but according to Rollins 'We have been studying AMD closely. Some of their products are more advanced'.
Amongst the largest server manufacturer's in the world, Dell is the only company which adheres to an Intel-only policy. HP, IBM and Sun all have products featuring AMD chips. However, Intel has slipped behind AMD in producing a fully x86 competitor to the Athlon 64 and has now been forced into the unfamiliar position of having to play catch up to AMD in the development of multicore architectures for the next generation of processors.
The consensus is that Dell is waiting for the next generation of 64-bit Windows operating systems to appear from Microsoft before announcing a move.
