Intel brings tri-mode wireless networking to Centrino

Posted on 26 Aug 2004 at 18:06

Intel has confirmed extended support for wireless networking in its Centrino platform for notebook PCs. A new tri-mode wireless module will support the IEEE 802.11a, b and g standards.

The new module, the Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG Network Connection, is intended to make it easier to set up a wireless connection with any Wi-Fi network at the maximum available data rate. Having launched in March 2003 with 802.11b, it was in October 2003 that Intel first announced 802.11a support with 802.11g following before the year's end. The flexible tri-band support announced today was originally due to be appearing by mid 2004.

The new module also supports the security-oriented IEEE 802.11i standard, which enables a single sign-on for wireless networks.

Along with the new hardware, Intel has updated the Intel PROSet/Wireless Software to version 9.0. This includes a configuration wizard, profile management, support for advanced troubleshooting and an automated security set up.

The Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG Network Connection will be appearing in Centrino-based notebooks from September.

Remember that the PRO/Wireless module is one element of the Centrino trinity, which also includes Intel 855 chipsets and the Pentium-M processor. It is possible to buy notebooks, for example from Dell, that carry the chipset and processor but carry the vendor's own wireless networking modules. These, however, can not be officially branded as Centrino machines, a logo that Intel controls.
