Following its announcement in July, Microsoft has launched Windows Storage Server 2003.

Previously known as Windows Powered Network Attached Storage (NAS), Windows Storage Server is a dedicated file and print server solution, Windows Storage Server 2003 can support storage from between 160 Gb to over 40Tb.

The product offers many features found in Windows Server 2003 including the Microsoft Visual SourceSafe file management tool, that allows administrators to 'shadow', or point-in-time, copies of a single volume or multiple volumes.

Microsoft says that the product offers Distributed File System (DFS) support, eight-node server clustering and multipath input/output technology. Windows Storage Server 2003 will also support the Windows Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI), which can configure an NAS device into an IP-based storage area network.

Windows Storage Server 2003 will be available through OEMs, including Dell, Fujitsu-Siemens, Hewlett Packard, Iomega, MaXXan Systems, and NEC.
