AMD extends the Opteron server range

AMD has announced two new additions to the Opteron family of 64-bit server processors: the Opteron Model 846 and the Model 146.

The 846 is for heavy-duty eight- or four-way server systems, such as those handling large-scale databases and mission-critical enterprise applications.

The 146, by contrast, is aimed at workstations for memory-intensive applications such as multimedia content creation and engineering design packages. Alternatively, it will serve as an entry-level server for smaller businesses.

'With the AMD Opteron processor Model 146, AMD will re-energise the workstation market,' claimed Marty Seyer, general manager of AMD's Microprocessor Business Unit.

The Opteron 846 is priced at $3,199 and the 146 is priced at $669, based on 1,000-unit quantities.

The Opteron is based on AMD's eighth-generation processor core, which is the industry's first 64-bit, x86 architecture. A desktop equivalent - the Athlon64 - will be launched 23 September.
