First preconfigured MySQL server to debut

MySQL, the world's most popular open source database developer, and US hardware supplier PogoLinux Inc are to launch the first integrated server database platform.

The server, to be called the DataWare 2600 Server, will be a turnkey solution and the partners say that the hardware and software components will be tuned for maximum performance.

Although, at the time of writing, no pricing for the unit had been set. But, being based on open source software, it is more than likely that the DataWare 2600 will be considerably cheaper than an equivalent machine based on Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server. Assuming the hardware consists of off-the-shelf yet reliable components, the machine could prove an attractive proposition for cost sensitive businesses.

Of course, as Oracle and Microsoft will no doubt be quick to tell us, cost of ownership is more than the price of the hardware and software. No doubt, having a preconfigured unit will go a long way towards cutting down on configuration costs but a lot will also depend on the quality of the technical support. Pogo Linux will support the hardware and MySQL the software although one can envisage a small boom for consultants who build end to end business solutions.

Pogo Linux has also been named the first "MySQL Certified Hardware Partner", which presumably opens the door to other hardware vendors to build a similar turnkey solution.

The DataWare 2600 appliance will be launched on August 4th at the LinuxWorld Conference & Expo.
