Office updates trapped in installation loop

The latest batch of security updates for Microsoft Office appears to be leaving some users trapped in an installation loop.

This month's Patch Tuesday update included three fixes related to Office 2007 - KB2760411, KB2760588 and KB2760583 - that are causing many users grief.

While the updates all appear to install correctly, they subsequently reappear in Windows Update as ready for installation, as if they were never installed in the first place.

"It seems they can be installed multiple times - I've installed them three times so far - and they always install successfully but they are then always available for re-install," said a PC Pro reader who alerted us to the problem.

"Once they have been installed our WSUS server sees them as installed correctly and says the PC is 100% patched, but on the client itself they are requesting to be installed once more."

Our reader is far from the only user trapped in the installation loop. A series of threads on the Microsoft Community forums show many users are suffering from the same problem.

Microsoft hadn't returned a request for comment at the time of publication.

add me to the list

It's driving me nuts as well, only a small home network but every darned machine that has been updated, is moaning that it needs the !"£$% update, so far after three retries it is still not 'sticking'.
Now I just delete the prompt - NOT A GOOD WAY FORWARD.

And me!

Yes, we have the same problem - and it affects computers updating directly from the Microsoft servers and those updating through WSUS (we have some of each).

I'm just leaving them as they are for now - hopefully Microsoft will fix it before too long.

This is not the first problem with Microsoft updates this year - a few months back there was one which conflicted with Kaspersky and made the computers run chkdsk every time they started up. Kaspersky issued their own patch to fix it fairly quickly, and Microsoft got there with their own patch eventually.

Updates worked ok for me this month.

Not working for me either

The updates aren't sticking for me either (Win 7 x64). I gave up after the 4th attempt.

it's now 15:21 UK time and they appear to have issued a fix for the 3 broken updates. my PC just downloaded fresh copies of the successfully installed patches and it is no longer repeatedly nagging for their install

spoke too soon, having briefly said no available updates it now says the same 3 again.

Oh no!

"Once they have been installed our WSUS server sees them as installed correctly and says the PC is 100% patched, but on the client itself they are requesting to be installed once more."

Oh no.. Just no. By using WSUS you're supposed to AVOID these situations by validating, testing, even waiting, BEFORE rolling out the updates.

There is NO excuse for businesses to be caught by ANY update issues.

Which updates?

I got 24 updates yesterday mostly for Office but none of the 3 discussed above?

Sorry!

Should learn to read more carefully. I've got Office 2010.

KB2760583 KB2760411 KB2760588 Loop

Unfortunately, in advance of the Patch Tuesday releases I had been wading through a backlog of WSUS approval admin on our server. When this loop occurred on numerous client PCs I simply assumed I'd screwed up, so wasted a couple of hours trying to identify the problem. Just great.

Choose custom install and deselect all three choices-accept that they will not install-wait till Microsoft fixes the problem-install at that time-hope that al Qaeda does not blow you up or the US listen to your conversations.
