Credit card security might be a key concern for consumers, but almost one in five companies are not compliant with data security standards that govern payment systems.
According to a survey conducted by research company Gartner, 18% of respondents admitted they were not compliant with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard, even though they should be.
"Given that many of the technology providers in the security market target their products and help with PCI-related compliance initiatives, it came as something of a surprise that such a high percentage of survey respondents said that they were not PCI-compliant," said Lawrence Pingree, research director at Gartner.
Gartner said that IT managers trying to balance budgets continued to treat security as a priority, but that PCI compliance was taking a back seat.
According to Pingree, companies put data loss prevention at the top of their security to-do lists.
