Office 2010 hits Release Candidate

Office 2010

Microsoft has provided a select group of testers with the Release Candidate of Office 2010, according to reports.

"Microsoft made a release candidate available to members in the technology adoption program (TAP)," a Microsoft representative told CNet.com. "This is one of Microsoft's planned milestones in the engineering process; however [we] do not have plans to make this new code set available broadly."

The release means Microsoft looks well on course to deliver Office 2010 by the planned release date of June.

The company issued a public beta of Office 2010 at the end of last year, a copy of which can be found on this month's DVD edition of PC Pro.

The big question mark still hanging over Office 2010 is the readiness of the Office Web Apps, which are being launched alongside the client software. The Word Web App still only allows users to view, rather than edit, documents, while the online version of OneNote remains completely disabled.

Microsoft has yet to announce UK pricing for Office 2010, despite releasing US prices some weeks ago. The company was due to deliver the UK prices last week, but cancelled the announcement at the last minute.

I'm hoping Office 2010 is available for academic users PDQ, as I am finding a number of small but useful improvements over Office 2007. Windows 7 was as soon as it was released so hopefully Office 2010 will be as well, including Visio.
