New from Intel: Build your own server
Chip giant Intel has introduced a new range of products to allow OEMs to build a new generation of servers. The 'building block' releases include server boards, server chassis, and RAID controllers, all based on Intel's Xeon processor and Intel E7500 chipset.
The Intel Server Board SE7500WV2 is a dual-processor board, integrated with the new Intel Serve Chassis SR1300 or SR2300, and is optimised for high density, rack-mount server environments. The Intel Server Board SE7500CW2 is aimed at the 'value server' part of the market, targeted at small and medium-sized businesses. Finally, the Intel Server Board SHG2, using the new Intel Server Chassis SC5200 is for general purpose, high-performance servers, for more demanding applications.
Intel has also released version 5.1 of its Server Management software. The company claims it can monitor 200 components on the server boards, generating emails or alerts whenever problems are detected. With monitoring at the hardware level, the system can successfully provide diagnostic information even when the machine is 'offline'.

Timed to co-incide with the Intel announcement, Evesham Technology unveiled a new series of its SilverEdge range of Enterprise Servers incorporating the new Intel products. This month Evesham is launching the SilverEdge 500 Xeon and the SilverEdge 300P, an entry-level model based on the Pentium 4. Coming in July are the SilverEdge 2000R and SilverEdge 1000 Xeon, which have dual Xeon processing capability, and the SilverEdge 500, which will provide quad processing power with Xeon MP processors.
Stuart Truman, Evesham's Chief Technology Officer, said that as much as forty per cent of Evesham's revenues now comes from the business market, with the company increasingly focussing on providing business services around the sale of desktops and servers.
