Skype to take over business phones

Skype today plans to announce a version of its internet calling software that connects to corporate phone systems.
The new software, called Skype for SIP, will allow employees to make domestic and international calls with regular office telephones, instead of a headset plugged into a personal computer, reports the Wall Street Journal.
Initially, the company will charge about 2.1 cents (1.4p) per minute for calls to mobile phones and fixed lines, but calls from computers to phone systems using the Skype software will be free.
Skype, which was acquired by Ebay in 2005, is one of the best-known internet telephony firms that allow free calls among internet users.
The SIP service could provide a much-needed revenue stream for Skype, which has lost almost half its value since its 2005 buyout.
Recent reports suggested that Ebay was looking to offload the Skype business. "The synergies between Skype and the other parts of our portfolio are minimal," Ebay chief executive John Donahue said in February.
"We're going to continue to run and operate the business. It's not a distraction currently. And at such time when we have further announcements on that, we'll let you know."
