Full details of IBM e-servers released
Posted on 3 Oct 2000 at 15:24
IBM has officially released full details of the rebranding of its line of servers.
Essentially, the term "eserver" will prefix a notional sub-division of its existing range of products.
The most obvious change is that the AS/400 identity will be subsumed within one of a range of "Series".
The rebadging is seen as a statement of intent - part of an ongoing process to harmonise IBM's diverse set of platforms, in an e-business friendly way.
The details of the various Series are as follows. Intel-based servers fall under the xSeries (containing Netfinity and NUMA-Q). High-performance UNIX servers fall within the pSeries (eg the RS/600). Integrated application servers are represented by the iSeries (AS/400). And finally, enterprise servers constitute the zSeries (S/390 G5 and G6, and the S/390 Multiprise).
