Promethean showcases ActivTable

Promethean has unveiled its own spin on the table computer at BETT 2012 in London, with a device similar to Microsoft’s Surface technology but focused on the education market.

Aimed at primary school and Special Educational Needs (SEN) learners, the Promethean ActivTable features a 46in touchscreen in a robust table body, with touch support for up to six children at a time. It runs Windows 7, but with a complete library of educational tools including onscreen keyboards, web browsers and applications.

While it integrates with Promethean’s existing content and solutions, the ActivTable’s software targets pupil-to-pupil collaboration, with a range of 70 customisable learning activities that encourage children to interact directly with onscreen objects, passing them around, flopping them over and connecting them together.

For example, various foods can be dragged and dropped into their different groups, while photos can be dragged around, resized and distorted via touch. Promethean expects to add more activities over time, both in-house and from its active teacher/developer community.

“ActivTable offers an intuitive way to engage students, making learning fun and relevant in the 21st century," said ActivTable Product Manager, Helen Isherwood. "ActivTable uses the touch-sensitive technology many students are already familiar with away from the classroom through tablets and smartphones.”

ActivTable will be available in June, with UK pricing yet to be confirmed.
