Microsoft has brought its Spotify rival Xbox Music to the web, offering customers unlimited streaming through a browser-based player.

Xbox Live users paying £8.99 a month for an Xbox Music Pass can sign in to music.xbox.com to start playing music through their browsers.

There's no free, ad-funded option in the browser version, though there is a free 30-day trial for using an Xbox Live account. Users can use the web player across multiple PCs simultaneously, meaning they could share accounts.

Xbox Music is already available as a free app to Windows 8 and Windows RT users, though they have to sit through ads unless they upgrade to a paid account. Paying users also get ad-free access Xbox Music on Windows Phone and Xbox 360.

The £8.99 monthly charge is cheaper than most on-demand streaming services - Spotify and the like cost £9.99 a month - but Xbox Music only supports a limited selection of devices.

Xbox Live product manager Pav Bhardwaj said at the time of Xbox Music's launch that Android and iOS apps would be available by April this year. That hasn't happened yet, but it's likely more device support is on the way.

So

are they hoping I'll switch over because this is £1 cheaper than Spotify's more expensive plan?
