uswitch wishes for a broadband-enabled Christmas

Online comparison service uswitch is advising shoppers to ensure they have broadband in place, as many of this year's top pressies rely on a powerful Net connection to get the most out of them.

This year's top gifts include the XBox 360 and the iPod nano, both of which can benefit from a broadband connection. But with new connections taking 10 days to put in place, the company is advising consumers not to leave it any later before setting one up.

It also says that it has never been such a good time to get connected, and anyone having taken out a 1Mb connection a year ago could save a fortune in upgrading to 2Mbps services.

This time last year, a 1Mbps connection cost on average £30 a month. Now, with some companies offering 2Mbps connections for £15, consumers could cut their Internet costs by half. They could even make further savings by using the services such high speed connections make possible, such as cheap phone calls over the Internet.

Jon Miller, Director at uSwitch.com said: 'The broadband market has moved on, and packages are now available at nearly half the price. Customers could save up to £180 a year by switching - the cost of a Sony PSP! Collectively, that could be a saving of £324m simply by upgrading to a superior 2Mbps package.'

You can use uswitch's comparison engine to compare services at its website.
